Prof. Dr. Mevlana Derya Balbay has graduated from Hacettepe University Medical School in 1985. Completed urology residency at Hacettepe University Medical School between 1988-1992. Did clinical fellowship in Urooncology at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center between 1996-1999. Assumed the titles of Associate Professorship in 1999 and Professorship in 2008. Also graduated from Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Open and Distant Education, \u0130stanbul University in 2024.\n
\nIn addition to general urology, majority of his surgical volume consists of cancer surgeries and endourology. Has started robotic surgery in 2009 and has done and mentored over 1000 robotic cases including radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy and intracorporeal continent neobladder reconstruction, partial and radical nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy, partial and total adrenalectomy, retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, pyeloplasty, prostatic adenomectomy and ureteroneocystostomy procedures.\n
\nHas done the very first case of simultaneous robot assisted laparoscopic radical nephroureterectomy; genitalia sparing radical cystectomy; superextened lymph node dissection and intracorporeal Studer pouch construction on the same patient with both bladder and ureteral tumors in the World.\n
\nHe has particularly developed his own techniques on 1) Robotic Intracorporeal Studer Pouch Formation, 2) Endopelvic Fascia Sparing Robotic Radical Cystectomy and 3) Ileal Neobladder Construction with Enhanced Antireflux Mechanism by Anterior Repositioning of the Afferent Loop.\n
\nCurrently an active member of International Robotic Cystectomy Consortium (IRCC) and International Prostate Forum (IPF). He got involved in many ERUS (EAU Robotic Urology Section) and IRCC joint publications. \nIn addition to several poster and video presentation awards, he received 1) U.T.M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Clinical Trainee Research Award (1997), 2) Turkish Association of Urology Service Award (2014), 3) UT MDACC David A. Swanson M.D. Endowed Lecture Series Urology Distinguished Alumnus Award (2019) and 4) \u2018Distinguished Career Award\u2019 SIU (Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Internationale d\u2019Urologie) 2023. \nAs of March 1st, 2025 his 266 publications listed in SCI and SCIE, received 2964 international citations (2858 nonself) in 2564 articles (2498 nonself). His H index is 25 (Web of Knowledge).
